McDonnell was awarded the Academy Award nomination for her part in Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is also well-known for her performance as president Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica as the wife of President in Independence Day and for her prominent performance in Donnie Darko, as the main protagonist's mother.
